Kenyan Officer Reportedly Dead as Haiti Mission Suffers Another Blow
A Kenyan security officer serving under the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti has died together with a civilian after a convoy accident involving two armoured vehicles in the hills above Port-au-Prince.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening along the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road, specifically at Perlerin 9 — a route notorious for violent gang attacks, fatal accidents and frequent clashes between armed groups and security forces.
According to MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka, the crash happened during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro armoured vehicles. One vehicle was towing the other and suffered mechanical failure which led to the accident.
Eight officers were injured, three of them critically. They were rushed to Lambert Santé Hospital in Pétion-Ville where doctors confirmed the deaths of one officer and a civilian upon arrival. The critically injured are scheduled for medical evacuation to the Dominican Republic while others are receiving treatment at Aspen Level 2 Hospital.
“The accident involved both officers and civilians. Sadly we lost one of our men and a civilian. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and the injured during this difficult time,” Ombaka said in his statement, condoling with the bereaved families.
Although the MSS did not confirm the nationality of the fallen officer, local Haitian media reported that the deceased was Kenyan.
This is the latest in a series of casualties in the multinational mission to restore peace in Haiti as gang violence spirals out of control. Two weeks ago, Haiti’s National Police lost two elite SWAT officers after a drone carrying explosives detonated during an operation.
The MSS has also lost personnel in recent ambushes. One officer was confirmed dead while another—believed to be Kenyan—remains missing and feared dead.
Meanwhile the UN’s human rights office has released shocking statistics: between October 2024 and June 2025 over 1,000 people were killed, more than 200 wounded and at least 620 kidnapped across several regions, the scale of the crisis in Haiti.
