KFS Moves to Calm Fears Over Alleged Python Sighting in Karura Forest

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has issued a safety advisory to Kenyans visiting Karura Forest after reports of a python sighting emerged this week.

In a statement released Thursday evening, KFS confirmed receiving public concerns following viral images and videos of a large python in the forest. However, the agency said the footage and photos are yet to be verified.

Despite the uncertainty, KFS is advising visitors to be safe by sticking to the designated jogging and walking trails. “Any python sightings should be reported to our rangers at the entry gates,” KFS said. Pet owners should also keep their animals on leashes while in the forest.

The caution comes after social media videos went viral showing a python slithering across a path near Lily Lake.

Karura Forest, between Nairobi and Kiambu counties, is one of the city’s most beloved green spaces, attracting runners, hikers and families for picnics. This is not the first time a python has caused alarm in the area; previous sightings were reported in 2019 and 2022.

At the time, Friends of Karura – the community-based group managing the forest – told the public that the African rock python is non-venomous and harmless to humans unless disturbed.

While there is no immediate danger, KFS will work with relevant authorities to assess the situation and provide long-term solutions if necessary.
