KMTC Rolls Out Full Scholarships for 2026 Certificate Intake in Community Health Nursing Amid Push to Strengthen Rural Healthcare
The Kenya Medical Training College (Kenya Medical Training College) has announced a new wave of full scholarships targeting students joining its Certificate in Community Health Nursing programme for the 2026/2027 academic year.
In a notice issued on Thursday, May 14, by KMTC Chief Executive Officer Kelly Oluoch, the institution confirmed that the fully-funded opportunity will be rolled out in partnership with the Beyond Zero Initiative, with training set to begin in September 2026 and run for two years.
Full funding package confirmed
According to KMTC, the scholarship will cover the entire cost of training for successful applicants selected into the programme, which is designed to strengthen primary healthcare delivery at the community level.
“The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), in partnership with the Beyond Zero Initiative, is offering scholarship opportunities for the Certificate course in Community Health Nursing commencing September 2026 in the 2026/2027 academic year,” the notice stated.
Officials say the programme is part of a broader strategy to bridge healthcare gaps in underserved regions and improve access to essential medical services, particularly in rural and marginalised communities.
Targeted groups and priority areas
The scholarships will prioritise applicants from Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) counties, as well as candidates from vulnerable, minority, and historically underserved communities.
KMTC has also emphasised that successful candidates will be expected to commit to serving in their communities after graduation, as part of efforts to enhance grassroots healthcare delivery.
Female applicants have been particularly encouraged to apply, in what the institution describes as an effort to boost gender inclusion in community health services.
Entry requirements outlined
To qualify for the programme, applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements:
- KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) or its equivalent
- C- (minus) in English or Kiswahili
- C- (minus) in Biology
- At least D+ (plus) in either Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry
In addition, applicants must submit a handwritten essay of not more than 200 words, explaining why they deserve the scholarship and how they intend to contribute to their communities after training.
How to apply
Applications will be conducted online via the KMTC admissions portal:
- Visit admissions.kmtc.ac.ke and create an account
- Complete the online application form
- Click “SUBMIT” and verify all details
- Save changes and access the dashboard
- Select “Apply Beyond Zero Scholarship”
- Fill in the required scholarship information
- Print the application, attach supporting documents, and have them signed and stamped
- Submit the physical documents to the KMTC CEO’s office in Nairobi before June 13, 2026
Push to expand community health workforce
The initiative comes as Kenya continues to scale up its community health strategy, with increasing focus on preventive care, maternal health, and early disease detection at the grassroots level.
By fully funding training for selected students, KMTC aims to reduce financial barriers while also creating a pipeline of trained professionals committed to serving in hard-to-reach areas.
