KNEC Sets Guidelines for Grade 9 Learners’ Placement in Arts and Sports Pathway

KNEC has directed schools to nominate Grade 9 learners with exceptional talents in arts and sports to join the Arts and Sports Science Pathway in senior secondary schools.

KNEC CEO David Njengere said the nominations are part of preparations for the roll out of Senior School Pathways under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) which will start in January 2026.

Schools are to submit the names of eligible learners by October 17, 2025 focusing on students who have shown exceptional potential in areas such as Visual Arts, Sports, Theatre, Music and Dance.

To help in the process the Ministry of Education has provided a Nomination Tool to guide teachers in objectively assessing and selecting learners. The tool ensures that nominations are based on genuine talent and merit.

Submission Process

Schools are to submit nominations through the online portal using their school code as both username and password. Once logged in schools can follow the user manual to update passwords and enter learners’ details.

All submissions must have supporting evidence of learners’ achievements such as records of performances, productions, exhibitions, awards and originality of works. Schools are also advised to read the nomination form instructions carefully to avoid errors and omissions.

The Ministry of Education has three Senior School Pathways to guide learner placement based on ability, achievement and career aspirations: Social Sciences, Arts and Sports Science and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The directive is a clear indication that Kenya is committed to nurturing talent early and aligning education pathways with learners’ strengths and career goals under the CBC framework.
