KNUT Ask TSC to Prioritize Long-Term Unemployed Teachers, Demand End to Political Hiring of Teachers.

Teachers who have remained jobless for over a decade must be urgently prioritized for employment, according to Makueni KNUT Chairman Samuel Mulwa. While addressing Madaraka Day celebrations at Mukuyuni Primary School, Mulwa emphasized that many qualified teachers have waited since 2011 without securing permanent jobs. He explained that these professionals are growing older without reaping the benefits of their academic achievements.

Mulwa urged area MP Joshua Kimilu to advocate for these teachers in Parliament, noting that their prolonged joblessness is increasingly concerning. He reported that these educators have endured years of frustration and missed opportunities, while their efforts to secure meaningful employment have gone unrewarded. According to him, it is deeply unfair that such dedicated individuals remain unemployed even after more than ten years of graduation.

He stated that the affected teachers were suffering in silence and losing hope, as time was not on their side and their energy and ambitions were slowly being drained by stagnation.

The union leader also criticized the inconsistency in government resource distribution. He questioned why the Ministry of Education manages to deliver the exact number of textbooks needed but relies on the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) to disburse capitation funds, which often fall short of schools’ needs. He said school heads were burdened by running institutions with inadequate funding.

He added that the current system puts unnecessary strain on principals who are expected to deliver results despite severe financial constraints. He described the situation as dire, saying that managing schools with less than what is required made administration extremely difficult and compromised quality.

Despite these challenges, Mulwa acknowledged and praised Makueni Governor’s support in the education sector. He highlighted the governor’s efforts in improving Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), particularly the hiring of ECDE teachers. He pointed out that many ECDE classrooms were now overpopulated and called for the recruitment of additional teachers to manage the workload effectively.

Mulwa said the governor had done commendable work and shown genuine interest in early education, asking for continued investment to sustain the gains made.

In response to the union leader’s remarks, MP Joshua Kimilu backed the call for timely and sufficient school capitation. He asserted that if necessary, all other development agendas should be paused to prioritize education funding for the benefit of schoolchildren.

Kimilu also expressed disapproval of the practice of issuing employment letters during political functions. He insisted that the Teachers Service Commission must fully assume its mandate and avoid politicizing teacher recruitment.

He warned that employment should not be tied to political events or affiliations, saying, “Let’s not politicize teachers’ employment. TSC must do its work independently.”
