KRA issues warning after hackers take over official X account
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been forced to issue a public warning to steer clear of its customer service X account after some wily individuals managed to get their hands on it and pull the wool over the public’s eyes.
In a statement put out yesterday, the agency explained that hackers had changed the name of the account (which used to be @KRACare) to @Standx_Officiel and were now using it to scam unsuspecting users. ‘Our KRA care Twitter account has been compromised and the thieves have changed the handle to StandsX for their own dodgy purposes , the statement bluntly put it. ‘So we’re having to warn the public loud and clear not to have a bar of any of the malarkey they’re posting up there.’
The authority is working with the people who run X to get the account back and keep the miscreants from causing any more trouble.
”We’ll keep you posted through proper KRA channels ” the statement went on. ”Still, you can get hold of us through Facebook or give us a shout on 0711099999”
A look back at the account shows it was last active Thursday morning and had posted a message about reporting shady tax practices.
This isn’t the fist time KRA has had to deal with a customer service issue this year – The account was set up back in 2014, and is a separate thing from the corporate page, with a respectable 122,000 followers of its own.
Saddeningly this is just the latest in a string of cyber-attacks on government departments the DCI, KBC and BRS have all been hit in recent months.
