KUCCPS 2026 Degree Requirements Revealed: Full Cluster Breakdown Every Student Must Check Before Applying

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service has finally released the updated subject requirements for the 2026 university placement cycle — and if you’re a KCSE candidate planning your next move, this isn’t something to skim through.

The new guidelines outline exactly which subjects — and which grades — students must have to qualify for different degree programmes. And yes, the clusters are still here. But there are a few important clarifications students need to pay attention to.

If you’re eyeing engineering, medicine, business, ICT, education or even journalism, here’s what you need to know.

KUCCPS Sticks to Cluster System for 2026 Placement

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has maintained the cluster-based system, grouping similar degree programmes under common subject requirements.

In simple terms? Courses are bundled together based on similarities. Each cluster has specific subject combinations students must meet.

Across nearly all degree programmes, English or Kiswahili and Mathematics remain central requirements. But from there, things start to differ — sometimes significantly — depending on the field of study.

Science-based courses are still strict. Humanities and business? A bit more flexible.

Engineering and Physical Sciences: Mathematics and Physics Remain King

If you’re dreaming of becoming an engineer, nothing has changed — Mathematics and Physics remain non-negotiable.

Under the Engineering, Geospatial & Physical Sciences Cluster — which includes Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Geospatial Engineering — students must have:

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry or Geography
  • Any Group II, III, IV or V subject

Minimum grades? Mostly C+ and above in Mathematics and Physics.

That C+ isn’t optional. It’s the baseline.

Medicine and Health Courses: Strong Science Performance Required

Health-related courses continue to demand strong science backgrounds.

For programmes such as Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Clinical Medicine and Public Health under the Health Sciences & Medical Cluster, the requirements are:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics or Physics
  • English or Kiswahili

Students aiming for medical school must show consistent strength in Biology and Chemistry. Weak science grades could automatically lock you out.

ICT and Computer Science: Math Still Non-Negotiable

The digital world is expanding fast, but entry standards remain firm.

Under the ICT, Computer Science & Technology Cluster — including Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering and Informatics — students must have:

  • Mathematics
  • Physics or Computer Studies
  • Any Group II or III subject
  • Any Group II, III, IV or V subject

Mathematics is central here. Physics or Computer Studies strengthens your eligibility, and having prior computer knowledge is considered an added advantage.

Law, Business and Management: Flexible but Structured

For students leaning toward Law, Commerce, Procurement, Supply Chain, Entrepreneurship or Business Administration, KUCCPS places them under the Law, Business & Management Cluster.

Subject requirements include:

  • English or Kiswahili
  • Mathematics (Alternative A or B) or any Group II subject
  • Any Group III subject
  • Another Group II, III, IV or V subject

Compared to science-heavy courses, this cluster allows more flexibility. But Mathematics still appears — one way or another.

Arts, Journalism and Social Sciences: Language Matters

If you’re passionate about Journalism, Mass Communication, Sociology, Psychology or Political Science, pay attention to language grades.

Under the Arts, Communication & Social Sciences Cluster:

  • English (C+ and above)
  • Kiswahili (C+ for some courses)
  • Any Group II subject
  • Any Group III, IV or V subject

That C+ in English isn’t just a suggestion — it’s mandatory for many communication-related programmes.

Education Degrees: Your Teaching Subjects Must Align

For those pursuing teaching careers, KUCCPS separates Education (Arts) and Education (Science & Technical).

Education (Arts) requires:

  • Two teaching subjects from KCSE
  • English or Kiswahili
  • Mathematics or approved alternatives

Education (Science & Technical) requires:

  • Mathematics
  • Two science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • English or Kiswahili

Your intended teaching subjects must align with what you actually studied in KCSE. Otherwise, placement won’t go through.

Other Key Clusters Students Should Review Carefully

Architecture, Quantity Surveying and Urban Planning fall under the Built Environment Cluster, requiring Mathematics plus Physics or Geography.

Biological and Life Sciences programmes demand Mathematics, Biology and either Chemistry or Physics.

Agriculture and Environmental courses require Mathematics, Biology or Agriculture, and Chemistry or Geography.

Actuarial Science, Economics and Statistics remain math-intensive — with Mathematics as the anchor subject.

Students Warned Against Guesswork

Students have been urged to carefully review cluster requirements before submitting applications.

Choosing a course outside your subject qualifications could lead to automatic disqualification during placement. And that’s a risk no candidate wants to take after years of preparation.

The 2026 placement cycle may look familiar in structure — but small details matter. One subject. One grade. That’s all it takes to qualify — or miss out.

If you’re applying soon, now’s the time to double-check everything.

Because once placement is done, there’s no turning back.
