Trouble erupted at Litein Boys High School in Bureti Sub-County, Kericho County on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 night after students protested over undercooked rice served for dinner.

According to a police report, the chaos started from complaints about the evening meal and escalated into destruction of school property and required a joint response from security agencies.

The trouble started at around 21:00 hours in the school dining hall where students were not happy with the food. The situation got out of hand and students allegedly broke windows, damaged furniture and vandalized the main gate.

The school administration called Litein Police Station after the situation got out of control. Bureti Sub-County Police Commander (OCPD) Benedict Chirchir confirmed that officers were deployed to the school and used tear gas to restore order after students engaged the police in running battles within the school premises.

“We are still assessing the damages caused by the students last night,” OCPD Chirchir said. He added that no students or staff were injured during the incident and that the situation is now under control.

OCPD Chirchir said he had been invited to an emergency meeting called by the school’s Board of Management to discuss the cause of the disturbance and possible solutions.

This is the second time students have gone on the rampage at Litein Boys High School in two years. In May 2023, the school was closed indefinitely after a similar incident whose cause was not established.

During the 2023 disturbance, students damaged school property including biometric systems, window panes and several vehicles within the compound. Police from Litein Police Station were also called in to contain the situation.

The extent of the damage is still being assessed by school officials and security agencies.
