Macron to present ‘scientific proof’ His Wife Brigitte is a woman in US court
French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron are about to present scientific and photographic evidence in a US court to debunk the persistent conspiracy theories claiming Brigitte was born a man.
The couple has sued American commentator Candace Owens who has repeatedly claimed Brigitte was born male. Owens has millions of followers on social media and has said she will stake her “entire professional reputation” on the claim.
On the Fame Under Fire podcast, the Macrons’ lawyer Tom Clare said Brigitte has been deeply affected by the accusations, calling them “incredibly hurtful” and a distraction for the French president.
“Just like anyone balancing a career and family life, when your loved ones are under attack it takes a toll. President Macron is not immune to that pressure,” Clare said.
According to the lawyer the case will include expert testimony and scientific documentation to prove the claims are false. He wouldn’t give details but said Brigitte is willing to go through the uncomfortable process to “set the record straight” in a very public way.
The legal team confirmed photographs of Brigitte’s pregnancies and family life exist and will be presented as evidence in court under normal judicial procedures.
The controversy started with a 2021 YouTube video by French bloggers Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey which amplified the conspiracy theory. The Macrons won a defamation case against them in France in 2024 but the ruling was overturned on appeal in 2025 on free speech grounds not factual accuracy. The couple has since appealed.
In July the Macrons filed their lawsuit against Owens in the US, accusing her of deliberately ignoring the evidence and “platforming conspiracy theorists and proven defamers”.
Owens’ lawyers have responded with a motion to dismiss, saying the case was filed in the wrong state (Delaware) where she has no business ties. They claim defending the case there would cause “significant financial and operational hardship”.
In an interview with Paris Match earlier this year President Macron explained the reason behind the lawsuit:
“This is about defending my honour. This is someone who knowingly spread false information to cause harm, in the service of ideology and with links to far-right leaders.”The case will be a test of defamation law in the US where public figures have to prove “actual malice” — that the false claims were made with knowledge or reckless disregard for the truth.
Owens has said she believes what she’s saying and is exercising her right to free speech.
