Mario Pineida: Barcelona SC Defender Shot Dead in Guayaquil Amid Rising Violence in Ecuador
Tragedy struck Ecuadorian football on Wednesday as Mario Pineida, a defender for Barcelona Sporting Club (SC), was shot and killed in Guayaquil in a horrifying act of violence.
According to reports, Pineida was attacked by two individuals on motorbikes outside a local shop. He was accompanied by his mother and another woman at the time of the shooting. The assailants reportedly opened fire and fled the scene immediately.
The shocking incident comes as Ecuador continues to grapple with rising crime linked to the international drug trade. ESPN reports that homicides in the country have surpassed 9,000 this year, with criminal organisations exploiting the drug routes between Colombia and Peru.
Who Was Mario Pineida?
Mario Pineida, 32, was a seasoned defender in Ecuador’s Liga Pro, representing Barcelona SC since 2015. He began his career at local youth clubs before joining the famed Independiente del Valle academy, known for producing top talents such as Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo and Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie.
During his time at Barcelona SC, Pineida had loan spells at Brazil’s Fluminense and Ecuador’s El Nacional. He was capped nine times by the Ecuadorian national team and was part of the squad for the 2015 Copa America.
Tributes Pour In
Barcelona SC expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their player. In an Instagram post, the club said:
“To our members and fans: Barcelona Sporting Club informs, with deep sorrow, that it has officially been notified about the death of our player Mario Pineida, which occurred after an attack on him. This heartbreaking news deeply saddens all those who are part of the institution, and those who feel like family to Barcelona. In the coming hours, we will provide more information about the actions that will be taken to honour his memory. For now, we ask our members, fans, and the general public to offer a prayer for the rest of his soul and to strengthen his family during this time of immense grief.”
Independiente del Valle, where Pineida began his professional journey, also paid tribute, stating:
“The Independiente del Valle family expresses its note of sorrow at the passing of Mario Pineida, a former player of our academy. Much strength and peace to his family.”
Fluminense, where Pineida spent a season on loan in 2022, added:
“Fluminense Football Club received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Mario Pineida, an athlete who defended the club in 2022. Pineida arrived at the Tricolour at the beginning of the season in which we bled together as champions. The Fluminense club shows solidarity with the family and friends.”
A Growing Pattern of Tragedy in Football
Pineida’s death follows a separate tragedy in England, where Macclesfield player Ethan McLeod died in a car accident after colliding with a metal barrier on Tuesday evening. Tributes were also released by Macclesfield and his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers, mourning the loss of the young footballer.
As Ecuador mourns the loss of Pineida, questions over security and the safety of athletes in areas affected by rising crime remain urgent. Authorities are yet to release details on any arrests or leads related to the attack.
