Matiang’i and Maraga Hint at United Opposition Alliance Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i and former Chief Justice David Maraga have hinted at plans to form a united opposition alliance to take on President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government in 2027.

Speaking separately over the weekend, both leaders said the country was “going in the wrong direction” and emphasized the need to build a strong opposition to provide checks and balances.

Dr. Matiang’i who has been low-key since leaving government revealed that consultations were already underway among opposition figures to form a common front. He likened the process to building a house where different opinions must be harmonized to achieve stability.

“You know, bringing people together takes time—just like when building a house, everyone has an opinion,” Matiang’i said. “But we will be united as the opposition because that’s what Kenyans expect of us. We talk every day and we will stand together.”

In Kisumu, Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga made his first public indication he could join the opposition. He said his decision was driven by a commitment to defend the Constitution, promote integrity in leadership and fight corruption.

“We will work with anyone who shares our vision—someone who is committed to enforcing the Constitution, standing up against corruption and protecting citizens from government exploitation,” Maraga said. “I am ready to work with such people.”

Both leaders urged Kenyans especially the youth to take voter registration seriously ahead of 2027, saying meaningful change can only come through active civic participation.

“If you don’t have a voter’s card you can’t make a difference,” Matiang’i noted. “As President Kibaki used to say, you are useless in that regard. Young people must organize and ensure they register to vote.”

Justice Maraga echoed similar sentiments calling the voter’s card a “weapon of change” and urged young Kenyans to use it to shape the country’s future.

As 2027 approaches the statements by the two big guns have sparked talk of a broad opposition coalition that could change the political landscape.
