President William Ruto’s senior economic advisor, Moses Kuria, has launched a scathing attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of attempting to impose authoritarian control over Mt Kenya politics through intimidation and manipulation. The remarks were made over the weekend amid rising political tension in the region.

Kuria criticised Gachagua’s recent political maneuvers, including the launch of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), alleging that it is being used as a tool to coerce local leaders and voters into submission. He claimed that Gachagua had already begun exerting undue pressure on Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, warning that failure to align with the DCP could jeopardize his 2027 re-election prospects.

In a sarcastic online post titled “The Making of a Dictator,” Kuria outlined what he described as emerging signs of political authoritarianism attributed to Gachagua. He accused the former Deputy President of plans to personally vet DCP aspirants, dismiss rival parties, demand absolute loyalty from Mt Kenya leaders, and boycott musicians not aligned with his agenda.

Kuria posted:

“1. Governor Irungu Kang’ata, no matter how hard you work for Murang’a people, as long as you do not follow me, you will be a one-term governor.”
“2. I will personally interview all candidates seeking District Commissioners Party tickets to weed out uneducated ones.”
“3. All parties in Mt Kenya, except the District Commissioners Party, are sellouts and should be rejected.”
“4. All leaders in Mt Kenya, except those following me everywhere, are brainless.”
“5. All musicians from Mt Kenya who do not sing my praise songs are tukunias and tugeges. Do not listen to their music. Do not invite them to shows. Boycott all entertainment joints that invite them. Unfollow them on social media.”

Ending with biting sarcasm, Kuria quipped:

“What next… All women whose first name is not Dorcas are sellouts and will not go to heaven?”

Speaking at a separate event in Meru on Sunday, Kuria also criticised unnamed regional leaders for what he termed as divisive ethnic politics. While avoiding direct references, the remarks were widely interpreted as a continuation of his criticism against Gachagua and allies.

In another pointed attack, Kuria addressed Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro’s recent concerns over government use of social security funds. Kuria questioned the lawmaker’s integrity, stating it was morally inconsistent for Nyoro to speak out after serving as Chair of the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee—a position he lost on March 5 following political realignments that included opposition figures joining the government.

Kuria’s public outburst underscores deepening political fissures within the Mt Kenya leadership, as new parties and emerging power blocs reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. It remains to be seen how these tensions will influence regional unity and national governance moving forward.
