Moses Wetang’ula Breaks Silence on Ferdinand Wanyonyi’s Whereabouts After Death Rumours Spread Online
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has moved to quell growing speculation over the health and whereabouts of Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi, after a wave of false reports circulated online claiming the veteran lawmaker had died.
Addressing the National Assembly on Thursday, December 4, Wetang’ula dismissed the rumours as “malicious” and “wicked,” urging the public and Members of Parliament to refrain from spreading misinformation about individuals facing medical challenges.
Wetang’ula confirmed that Wanyonyi had been unwell and was admitted at Nairobi Hospital for about a month before being flown to India for further specialised treatment on the recommendation of his doctors.
“I want to inform the House that Ferdinand Wanyonyi, the Member of Parliament for Kwanza, is unwell,” the Speaker told MPs. “He was in Nairobi Hospital for about a month, and doctors recommended that we take him to India. He is there. I am saying this because I want to send a message to evil rumour-mongers claiming he passed away and that we are holding on to the information maliciously.”
The Speaker added that he had personally spoken to Wanyonyi and his family, assuring the House that the MP was responding positively to treatment, although he did not reveal the exact nature of the ailment.
“Yesterday I had a conference call with him, and his wife is the one who accompanied him. This morning, the Clerk did the same,” Wetang’ula said. “Wanyonyi has not passed on. He is responding well to treatment and is there with his wife and his daughter. I have personally communicated with them.”
The Speaker condemned individuals circulating unverified claims about the MP’s condition, saying such rumours were harmful not only to the affected families but also to the integrity of public discourse.
“This can happen to any MP,” he warned. “We should condemn people who take advantage of others’ plight and spread wicked rumours that have no value to anybody, not even themselves.”
The clarification comes amid heightened public concern in the Kwanza constituency, where residents had sought answers regarding their MP’s prolonged absence from public engagements.
Officials expect to issue further updates on Wanyonyi’s progress once additional medical assessments are completed in India.
