Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again stirred controversy with an explosive critique of Mount Kenya region Members of Parliament (MPs), accusing them of betraying their community through what he described as “record-breaking foolishness.” Speaking at AIPCA Gatumbi Church in Lari Constituency on Sunday, Gachagua pulled no punches as he condemned the lawmakers for what he termed as blind, sycophantic loyalty to President William Ruto.

In a fiery address laced with emotion and frustration, Gachagua slammed the MPs for failing to stand up for their region while government appointments and key opportunities allegedly favor other communities.

“How foolish are you, Members of Parliament from this region? William Ruto is laughing at you. The people from his community, he takes them to the military, to the police, to NYS, to KRA,” Gachagua declared, drawing loud murmurs from the church congregation.

He went further, saying history would not be kind to the current leadership from Mount Kenya, suggesting that future generations would look back on them as the most incompetent representatives the region has ever produced.

“When the history of this community is written, the Members of Parliament from this community will have a whole chapter of the most foolish leaders ever elected in the Mount Kenya region,” he said.

According to Gachagua, the MPs have remained suspiciously silent even as young people from their home areas are left unemployed and underrepresented in state appointments. He accused the government of sidelining the region, while exploiting its youth for destructive political purposes.

“You are an embarrassment to the people of this region. And I cannot fathom just how stupid a leader can be. It is very embarrassing to us as a people, as a community,” he added.

His remarks suggest widening cracks within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) coalition, where Gachagua once served as Ruto’s deputy and key ally during the 2022 election campaign. Since losing his position and being sidelined politically, he has become increasingly vocal about perceived injustices and regional marginalization.

Gachagua also weighed in on the recent apology issued by President Ruto to the Gen Z generation over deaths and abductions during nationwide youth-led protests. The apology, delivered at the National Prayer Breakfast, was dismissed by Gachagua as insincere and lacking gravity.

“How do you issue an apology about the loss of lives in such a casual manner? People were abducted, and there is no ‘if’ it happened,” Gachagua said. “If you are serious about making an apology, you should invite the parents of those who were abducted and offer a proper apology—and compensate them.”

His comments echoed sentiments expressed by opposition leader Raila Odinga during Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay County. Odinga had also called for the government to compensate families affected by the protests.

“Families who lost their sons and daughters must be compensated. It’s the only way to heal and move forward,” Odinga urged.

The outspoken former DP’s fiery rebuke has intensified public debate around Mount Kenya’s place in the national political equation. Gachagua’s comments reflect a growing feeling of disillusionment among some leaders and constituents, who believe their support during the last election has not been matched by proportional benefits.

Analysts say Gachagua’s remarks are likely to deepen divisions within the region and may signal an impending political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. His confrontational stance may resonate with disenchanted voters but could also isolate him from the inner circles of power.

Whether this rhetoric translates into a political movement or remains mere bluster remains to be seen. But for now, Gachagua’s declaration that Mount Kenya MPs are “breaking records in foolishness” has sparked a storm — and possibly a shift in the region’s political winds.
