Nanyuki Erupts in Protest as Residents Reject Government Plan to Build Ebola Quarantine Facility
Residents of Nanyuki took to the streets on Monday, June 1, in protest against a government proposal to establish an Ebola virus quarantine facility in the area, citing fears over public safety and the potential health risks associated with the deadly disease.

The demonstrations drew hundreds of locals who marched through sections of the town carrying placards, waving leaves, and chanting anti-government slogans as they voiced their opposition to the planned facility.
Protesters argued that the establishment of an Ebola quarantine centre in the region could expose residents to unnecessary danger and increase the risk of an outbreak should infected patients be brought into the area for treatment or observation.
Videos circulating online and seen by local media showed large crowds blocking roads and disrupting traffic as tensions escalated throughout the day.
Speaking during the demonstrations, one resident expressed the community’s concerns, saying: “It is the Ebola facility they plan to construct here that we do not want. We are worried about the safety of our families and the future of this town.”
The protests come amid growing public debate over the government’s preparedness measures against highly infectious diseases and the location of specialised quarantine facilities.
As the demonstrations intensified, police officers were deployed to affected areas to restore order. Witnesses reported running battles between protesters and security personnel after sections of the crowd refused to disperse.
Authorities had not immediately issued a detailed statement regarding the planned facility or the concerns raised by residents at the time of publication.
The Ebola virus is a severe and often fatal illness that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. While health experts maintain that properly managed quarantine and treatment centres play a crucial role in preventing outbreaks, fears surrounding the disease often trigger strong reactions from nearby communities.
The developments in Nanyuki are expected to increase pressure on government officials to provide further clarification regarding the proposed project and measures intended to guarantee public safety.
