The government has said it will build a state lodge, a golf course and an airstrip in Meru as part of the requirements to elevate the town to a city.

According to Forestry Principal Secretary (PS) Gitonga Mugambi, surveyors have already been on the ground to map out the land allocated for the state lodge. The facility will sit on 50 acres of land near the Meru Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) showgrounds.

“There was a big push to have a state lodge here in Meru and we brought a team here led by the chief surveyor of the Forestry Department. We got 50 acres of land for the state lodge,” Gitonga said.

He added that the project will not only give Meru a sense of pride but also opportunities that come with having a high profile facility.

Gitonga also confirmed that a golf course and an airstrip are in the pipeline. The two projects that residents have been demanding for long will ease transport, attract investors and open up more business opportunities in the region.

Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia welcomed the plans and pledged his administration’s support to work with the national government to make the projects a reality.

“Our work is simple: to implement the president’s directive to the Ministry of Forestry so that when we get city status we will have the required components,” Mutuma said.

The governor said the impact of these projects will go beyond city status and uplift the economy and lives of generations to come.

If implemented fully, the projects will turn Meru into a regional hub and put it among Kenya’s future cities.
