NCPB Announces New Maize Prices as Farmers Gear Up for Harvest

As the maize season approaches, NCPB has announced new prices for farmers across the country.

According to an internal NCPB memo dated Tuesday, September 23, Grade I and II maize will be bought at Ksh1,944 per 50kg bag in bulk. Farmers delivering already bagged maize will get Ksh2,269 per 50kg bag, which includes the cost of gunny bags provided by NCPB.

After deducting the 1% County Government Cess, the net payable to farmers is Ksh1,924.50 for bulk maize and Ksh2,249.50 for bagged maize. NCPB has also set the price of a 90kg bag of maize at Ksh4,050. The new prices are effective immediately and supersede all previous circulars.

“The guidelines for maize intake have been approved by the Managing Director and communicated under separate cover Ref: NGPB/2/14/2/VOLIII/21 dated 19th September 2025. Please be guided accordingly,” the memo read.

This comes months after the government released 200,000 bags of maize from the National Strategic Grain Reserve (NSR) to local millers to protect Kenyans from rising flour costs and potential maize shortages.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe confirmed in a statement on Monday, May 26, that the subsidized maize would be sold to millers at Ksh4,250 per 90kg bag. “The stocks held by the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) will be allocated to Miller Associations and individual millers in 90kg bags at a subsidized rate. The first batch will be distributed through select depots in the North and South Rift regions,” he said.

To ensure fair distribution, millers must meet strict criteria including proof of milling capacity, certificate of incorporation, tax compliance and KEBS quality certification.

Kagwe added that the payment and distribution process has already started and will pick up in the coming days. “NCPB started receiving payments for the maize on Thursday, 22nd May 2025, with sales and collections expected to start on Monday, 26th May 2025. The subsidy will stabilize maize and maize flour prices and cushion Kenyans from price shocks,” he noted.

To prevent abuse, millers must pay 25% upfront and provide proof of distribution before getting the remaining 75%. They will also submit maize utilization reports.
