NPSC Sets November Date for New Police Cadets to Begin Training
The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has revealed that all newly admitted cadets will officially report to training colleges on November 17, 2025.
Appearing before the National Assembly’s Committee on Administration and National Security, NPSC Chief Executive Officer Peter Leley confirmed that the government intends to bring in 10,000 police constables in the upcoming 2025/2026 financial year.
Leley assured MPs that the recruitment will prioritize transparency, inclusivity, and integrity, addressing long-standing concerns about fairness in the selection process.
Although the Commission has not yet confirmed the actual recruitment dates, it pledged to make a public announcement on September 11, ending weeks of speculation. Leley also disclosed that disputes between the NPSC and the National Police Service (NPS) over recruitment authority had finally been settled, with the Commission now fully in charge of the exercise.
To modernize the process, an online system will be deployed to manage applications and streamline selection. The NPSC emphasized that the new approach aligns with the recently enacted Recruitment and Appointment Regulations Act, 2025, which sets stricter rules for police hiring.
The large-scale intake follows a three-year break after the government suspended mass recruitment in 2022 due to budgetary pressures and advice from global lenders such as the IMF and World Bank. Both institutions had warned about Kenya’s ballooning wage bill, urging tighter payroll controls and even proposing a fresh two-year freeze across public service hiring.
Still, the government has opted to prioritize national security, citing a critical shortage of officers. The prolonged suspension left thousands of eager applicants stranded, but the upcoming exercise is expected to ease staffing gaps and strengthen service delivery in law enforcement.
