NTSA Number Plate Applications: New Digital Shift Cuts Vehicle Inspection to 20 Minutes
NTSA has rolled out major reforms to digitize and streamline its services, scrap paperwork and reduce waiting time for motorists.
In a statement on Thursday, the authority announced that application for reflective number plates will now be done only on eCitizen platform. Payments are fully automated and no manual forms will be handled.
Applicants will upload a colored copy of their logbook and clear images of the existing number plates. The new process has been reduced to three steps and will take no more than seven working days.
To enhance accountability, NTSA has also introduced real-time tracking features. Motorists will receive SMS updates at every stage of the application.
On motor vehicle inspections, NTSA said bookings and payments have also been moved to eCitizen. Motorists will be charged Ksh1,050 once an invoice is generated on the platform.
The inspection process is now paperless. Officers will use digital tablets to upload inspection data and photographs of vehicles directly into the system. This has reduced internal inspection steps from 25 to nine and the time motorists spend at inspection centres to under 20 minutes.
New compliance measures have also been introduced including adherence to Passenger Vehicle Body Construction standard (KS372:2019) and mandatory installation of Maximum Road Speed Limiters (KS2295:2018).
Inspection results will be updated automatically on NTSA mobile app for easy verification by law enforcement agencies. Motorists whose vehicles fail will be given 13 days to fix defects and come back for free re-inspection. But NTSA has warned that driving without a valid inspection certificate is an offence.
