NYOTA Youth Grants Explained: Who Qualifies, How to Apply, and What You’ll Get

Thousands of Kenyans youth are set to benefit from the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) program, a 5 year program that aims to promote youth employment, entrepreneurship and savings across the country.

The program was recently appraised by the National Assembly Committee on Social Protection and seeks to empower the unemployed and underemployed youth through financial support and skills development. However many Kenyans are not aware of the program’s structure, eligibility and benefits.

What is NYOTA

NYOTA is a government of Kenya initiative that seeks to address unemployment while promoting income generation and savings among the youth. The program targets vulnerable youth between the ages of 18 and 29, up to 35 years for Persons with Disabilities.

Eligible participants must have a Form 4 level of education or below and be unemployed, underemployed or earning low income. The program will reach youth in all 47 counties, including refugee populations in Garissa and Turkana.

Four Key Areas of Focus

NYOTA is structured into four main components, each implemented by different government agencies and partners:

  1. Youth Employability
Managed by State Departments of Youth and Labour, NITA and NEA, this arm equips young people with marketable skills, apprenticeships and job placement support.
  2. Employment Opportunities
Led by Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), this component promotes entrepreneurship by offering business development training, mentorship and start-up capital of up to Ksh50,000.
  3. Youth Savings
Implemented by National Social Security Fund (NSSF), this segment encourages savings among youth through financial literacy programs and incentives.
  4. Youth Employment Systems
Overseen by State Departments of Youth and MSMEs, this ensures the program is well managed and sustainably integrated into national employment systems.

MSEA’s Role in Empowering Young Entrepreneurs

Under MSEA, NYOTA will support over 100,000 young people through entrepreneurship development initiatives. These include socio-emotional and business skills training, access to capital and mentorship. Also, the Results-Based Financing Partnership with Social Enterprises will increase income and employment for 10,000 “hard-to-serve” youth, so that even the most marginalized are included in Kenya’s economic growth plans.

Government’s Pledge

Speaking before the program’s full roll out, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a said Parliament is committed to seeing the program succeed.

“With sustained commitment, we as a committee believe Kenya’s youth can and will be the drivers of economic resilience and inclusive growth,” Ng’ang’a said.

NYOTA is now a key component of the government’s long term plan to create sustainable employment and financial independence for Kenya’s youth.
