ODM Director Etale Reveals Raila Odinga’s Condition and Return Date

As rumors swirl online about Raila Odinga’s health, the former Prime Minister has spoken out to calm the nerves, telling Kenyans he is fine.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday afternoon, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Communications Director Philip Etale said he had just spoken to Odinga and he sounded cheerful and full of energy.

“I have just spoken to Raila Odinga, just five minutes ago. He is jovial and happy,” Etale said. He added that the ODM leader had a message for the public: “I am seeing people spreading so much propaganda online, let’s pray for them.”

Etale confirmed that Odinga, who is outside the country, will be back in Kenya in a few days. “He has sent me to greet all of you and says he will be back soon,” he said.

Raila’s long absence from the political scene had sparked widespread speculation with some social media users saying the opposition leader was unwell. But ODM officials have dismissed those claims, saying Odinga is in good health and on a private trip.

Just a day ago, the ODM leadership had issued a statement on the matter, terming the reports as baseless. “Honourable Raila travelled out of the country on Friday evening, one of many trips he has made this year and definitely not the last,” the statement read.

The party also faulted media reports that had alleged Odinga was receiving medical treatment abroad. “He definitely did not travel to Europe as reported by bloggers and some sections of the media. He is not indisposed as prayed for by his frustrated opponents,” ODM noted.

Speculation about Odinga’s whereabouts started earlier this month after the party postponed its 20th-anniversary celebrations, which were scheduled for October 3 in Mombasa.

Etale’s statement now brings relief to Raila’s supporters who had been seeking answers online.
