Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo has died following a devastating early-morning crash on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, leaving his white Mercedes-Benz E350 mangled beyond recognition.
According to police reports, the 3:00am collision occurred as Jirongo was driving from Nakuru towards Nairobi. His luxury sedan reportedly veered out of its lane and collided head-on with a Climax Coach bus. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was forced off the tarmac and into a nearby grassy verge, leaving the engine exposed and the frame twisted beyond repair.
Naivasha Traffic Base officers confirmed that “he failed to keep to his inner lane and collided head-on with the oncoming motor vehicle.” Despite the airbags deploying, the force of the crash was fatal, and Jirongo died instantly.
By daybreak, emergency responders had secured the scene, while a growing crowd of onlookers and local residents gathered, struggling to comprehend the sudden tragedy. Photos from the scene show the extent of the damage, with the rear and front of the Mercedes completely destroyed, highlighting the violent nature of the collision.
Community members, political associates, and local leaders arrived throughout the morning, mourning the loss of a man who had been a prominent figure in Kenya’s political landscape for more than 30 years.
Jirongo’s body was later taken to a local mortuary before being transferred to Nairobi. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
A local police spokesperson emphasized the importance of road safety, saying: “This is a tragic reminder of how crucial it is for drivers to maintain focus and adhere to traffic rules, particularly on high-speed highways.”
Jirongo’s passing marks the end of a career that saw him play a defining role in shaping Kenya’s political scene, leaving many in shock and the nation in mourning.
