Police Probe Strange Mbagathi Road Crash After Car Bursts Into Flames on Footbridge

Vehicle Erupts Into Flames After Crashing Onto Nairobi Footbridge as Police Probe Bizarre Mbagathi Road Horror

Police have launched investigations into a mysterious road crash after a vehicle burst into flames moments after reportedly veering off Mbagathi Road and crashing onto a pedestrian footbridge in Nairobi during the early hours of Saturday, July 11.

The incident occurred at about 6am on the flyover near the turn-off to Riara University, drawing large crowds of motorists and residents as thick flames and smoke engulfed the wreckage.

Videos circulating on social media and seen by local media outlets showed the vehicle lying on its side halfway down the staircase of the pedestrian footbridge while engulfed in flames. The dramatic footage also captured members of the public gathering at the scene as traffic slowed, with some motorists stopping to witness the unfolding emergency.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, with investigators yet to establish how the vehicle left the roadway and ended up on the elevated pedestrian bridge.

Witnesses at the scene claimed the vehicle appeared to have veered off the main road before driving onto the staircase leading to the footbridge, where it eventually came to rest before catching fire.

“It looked like the car came off the road and somehow ended up on the stairs before it burst into flames,” one eyewitness said.

Another witness alleged that a police officer at the scene desperately called for assistance while attempting to rescue an occupant believed to have been trapped inside the burning vehicle. However, the witness claimed the intense flames made the rescue impossible.

Unverified reports shared widely on social media suggested that three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and may have died after becoming trapped in the inferno.

However, by the time of publication, police had not officially confirmed the number of occupants involved, the identities of those inside the vehicle, or whether any fatalities had occurred.

Emergency responders and rescue personnel were later deployed to the scene to contain the fire, secure the area and manage traffic as recovery operations continued.

Police are expected to examine the wreckage and reconstruct the sequence of events to determine the cause of the crash, including how the vehicle left the carriageway and reached the pedestrian footbridge.

The unusual nature of the incident has sparked widespread shock and speculation online, with videos of the burning vehicle circulating widely across social media as Kenyans await official findings from investigators.
