Political Tensions Rise as Gunshot Hits Near Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s Home
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has issued a seven-day ultimatum to security agencies to conclude investigations into a mysterious gunshot fired near his family residence in Kibiko, Kabete Constituency, on Sunday afternoon.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the Governor appeared alongside several Members of the County Assembly, led by Majority Leader Godfrey Muceke. He condemned the incident as a disturbing act that raised serious security concerns and demanded “swift and conclusive action” from investigators.
The bullet struck the home of Margaret Njeri Njuguna, a neighbour whose house sits roughly 40 metres from the Governor’s residence. Officials are now probing whether the shot may have been intended for the Governor, who confirmed he had been home less than an hour before the incident.
Wamatangi explained that he had returned from a morning church service at around midday. After taking a brief rest, he walked to his nearby farm where he encountered unknown individuals cutting down trees using a power saw—activity he said he immediately ordered stopped. Shortly after returning to his residence, he was alerted that a gunshot had been fired in the vicinity.
“My neighbour, who is also a family friend, heard a loud sound and initially thought it was a stone hitting the roof,” Wamatangi said. “When she checked, she found a hole in her iron sheets, and upon looking inside, she discovered a bullet. That is when she realised it was a gunshot.”
The Governor suggested the attack may have had political undertones, linking rising tension among some of his opponents to President William Ruto’s recent tour of Kiambu, where Wamatangi received visible support from local residents.
“There are those who are unsettled by the unity and confidence the people of Kiambu have recently demonstrated,” he warned. “But let it be known: I will not be intimidated. No amount of threats, violence or reckless actions will silence me.”
Muceke echoed the Governor’s concerns, arguing that preliminary observations at the scene suggested the ammunition used could have come from an AK-47 rifle—an assessment that further heightened alarm among county leaders.
“This was not a light weapon,” Muceke said. “We are calling for heightened security around the Governor and increased vigilance within the community. Authorities must treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves.”
Margaret Njeri, the neighbour whose home was struck, told reporters she heard a “sudden loud bang” at around 3:30 p.m. She later found a bullet lying on the floor of her children’s bedroom. Njeri reported the incident to the police, expressing concern that either she or the Governor could have been the intended target.
“My farm is just above the Governor’s,” she explained. “He had gone to check his land earlier, and moments later the shot came towards my side. Was it meant for me, or was someone aiming at him?” she asked.
Governor Wamatangi and the accompanying MCAs called for a comprehensive investigation, insisting that authorities “leave no stone unturned” in uncovering the motive and identifying those behind the attack.
“The people of Kiambu deserve answers,” the Governor said. “This matter cannot be brushed aside. We expect full accountability within seven days.”
