Rigathi Gachagua Breaks Silence on His Whereabouts Amid Abduction Claims

Former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has addressed growing concerns over his safety, confirming he is secure following chaotic scenes at a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County.

Chaos Erupts at Wairima ACK Church in Othaya

A planned church event at Wairima ACK Church descended into disorder when teargas canisters were lobbed, reportedly by police, creating panic among worshippers. Videos from the scene captured teargas, chaos, and even shots fired, disrupting the service Gachagua was expected to attend. Reports indicate doors were locked, trapping attendees inside, while vehicles—including parts of the church property—were set ablaze amid the melee.

Gachagua Confirms Escape and Safe Arrival Home

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Gachagua clarified his whereabouts, dispelling rumors of abduction. He credited local residents for assisting his private security team in evacuating him from the tense situation.

“I thank the residents of Othaya for helping my private security to evacuate me to safety. I am now safe, having just arrived at my Wamunyoro residence,” he stated.

He further appealed to his supporters gathered in Othaya Town and Kiawara to disperse peacefully, noting that their vehicles had been disabled and sound systems dismantled.

Abduction Allegations Spark Opposition Outcry

The incident triggered immediate speculation and strong accusations from opposition figures, who claimed Gachagua had been abducted during the confusion. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka issued a stern warning, holding President William Ruto and his allies accountable.

“If anything happens to Rigathi Gachagua, William Ruto, you will not have a country, beginning with yourself. Kenya will hold you wholly responsible,” Musyoka declared.

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, who was present at the service, described severe impacts: teargassing of the church with police involvement, locked doors trapping worshippers and leaders (including Gachagua), and reports of shootings, with some men, women, and children fainting or injured.

Gachagua Labels Incident as State-Sponsored

Reiterating his position, Gachagua maintained that the chaos was orchestrated by the state, involving police acting on specific government orders. He described the events as part of a pattern of targeted disruption against him and his supporters.

This latest episode in Othaya highlights ongoing political tensions in the region, with Gachagua’s safety confirmation bringing some relief amid heightened calls for accountability and calm.
