Ruto Awarded Kazakhstan’s Highest Honour

President William Ruto has been awarded one of Kazakhstan’s highest state honours during a high-profile State Visit that signals deepening ties between Nairobi and the Central Asian nation.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev conferred the prestigious Order of Dostyk, First Degree — also known as the Order of Friendship — on Ruto in the capital, Astana, on Tuesday, May 20.

The award is regarded as one of the Republic of Kazakhstan’s most distinguished national honours and is reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions towards strengthening diplomatic relations, international cooperation, peace, and mutual understanding between nations.

Ruto’s recognition comes amid growing economic and diplomatic engagement between Kenya and Kazakhstan, with both governments seeking to expand partnerships in transport, trade, digital technology, mining, and regional connectivity.

Speaking shortly after receiving the honour, the Kenyan Head of State described the award as a reflection of the strengthening relationship between the two countries.

“I am deeply humbled and profoundly honoured to receive the Order of Dostyk, First Degree, one of the highest distinctions of your great nation,” Ruto said during the conferment ceremony in Astana.

The State Visit also saw the two leaders oversee the signing of several strategic agreements aimed at accelerating cooperation across key sectors.

Among the agreements signed was a Memorandum of Understanding on intermodal and multimodal transport systems designed to enhance trade routes and regional integration between the two nations.

The talks further focused on linking Kazakhstan’s transport corridors with Eastern Africa’s Northern Corridor and the LAPSSET Corridor — a major regional infrastructure project expected to boost trade and connectivity across the continent.

Kenya and Kazakhstan also signed a partnership agreement on ICT and e-government services, paving the way for closer collaboration in digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, innovation ecosystems, and public service delivery.

In the mining sector, the two governments agreed to cooperate on resource development, value addition, industrialisation, and implementation of investment projects intended to spur economic growth and create jobs.

The award places Ruto among a select group of foreign leaders recognised by Kazakhstan for advancing international diplomacy and strategic partnerships, at a time when Kenya is increasingly positioning itself as a gateway for trade and investment in Africa.
