Senator Khalwale Involved in Physical Confrontation with Kakamega County Official Over Stalled Projects

Tensions ran high on Friday evening after Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale had a heated exchange with a county official during an inspection tour of stalled development projects. The video has since gone viral and has sparked public debate on accountability and leadership in county affairs.

In the clip, Khalwale is seen confronting the official, accusing county administrators of corruption and negligence over the state of health services in Kakamega. He issued stern warnings, vowing to make sure those responsible for the failed projects face the law.

“I’m telling you in my lifetime, and get this straight, we will get you people arrested so that you pay for the lives of the people who have died since this hospital collapsed,” Khalwale said. “I am very serious, and I’m very objective—these are the fellows who are eating the money.”

The drama unfolded during a visit by the Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations which was conducting a fact-finding mission on incomplete county projects. Witnesses said the argument escalated quickly and Khalwale pushed the county official before fellow senators intervened to calm the situation.

Chairman Mohamed Abass and Senator Richard Onyonka stepped in to calm tempers and restore order as security officers and other officials looked on.

The Senate has been investigating stalled projects in Kakamega, with focus on the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital—a project that has been ongoing for nearly a decade without completion.

In a statement posted on the Senate’s official X account on Friday, October 3, 2025, the Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations said it had embarked on an on-site assessment of delayed projects in the county.

Led by Wajir Senator Mohamed Abass, the committee expressed concern over the prolonged delays in implementation of key infrastructure, particularly the hospital which is one of the region’s most important yet unfinished health facilities.

The committee’s report will reveal the causes of project stagnation and propose measures to enhance transparency, accountability and timely completion of public works. Meanwhile the drama involving Senator Khalwale has reignited debate on public officials and county governance.
