Rescue Operation Underway After Sand Lorry Ploughs Into Truck on Londiani-Muhoroni Road, Leaving Several Trapped
A major rescue operation is underway after a devastating road accident involving a sand-laden lorry and a transit truck left several people trapped along the Londiani-Muhoroni highway in Kisumu County.

The crash occurred at around 6:00am on Saturday, June 27, when the lorry, which was transporting sand, reportedly lost control before crashing head-on into a transit truck carrying vegetables.
The force of the collision left both vehicles extensively damaged, scattering debris across the busy highway and bringing traffic to a standstill as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
The accident also involved a motorcycle that was travelling along the same stretch of road at the time of the collision, further complicating rescue efforts and causing significant disruption to traffic.
Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes as rescuers, police officers and members of the public worked frantically to free victims trapped inside the twisted wreckage.
“Some of those trapped could still be heard crying for help as rescuers struggled to reach them,” one witness at the scene said.
By the time this article was published, rescue operations were still ongoing, with several occupants reportedly trapped inside one of the mangled vehicles. The exact number of casualties had not yet been confirmed by authorities.
Traffic police cordoned off part of the highway as they coordinated the removal of the wreckage, while motorists were urged to exercise caution and seek alternative routes to avoid lengthy traffic delays.
Authorities have not yet established the cause of the accident. Investigations are expected to determine whether speeding, mechanical failure, poor road conditions or other factors contributed to the collision.
Fresh Concern Over Rising Road Carnage
The latest crash comes amid growing concern over the increasing number of fatal road accidents across Kenya.
Only two days earlier, one person was killed in a collision involving an Ambasa Coach bus and a Toyota Prado along the Garissa-Nairobi highway in Mwingi.
According to a police report, the Prado, carrying four occupants, collided with the bus, which was travelling from Wajir to Nairobi. One passenger died from injuries sustained in the crash, while the remaining three occupants suffered critical injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Recent data released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) paints a worrying picture of road safety in the country.

The statistics show that Kenya recorded 2,150 road accident fatalities during the first half of 2026, representing an 11 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of deaths at 836, followed by motorcyclists. Passengers recorded 318 fatalities, while 188 drivers also lost their lives.
The latest accident is expected to reignite calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved road safety measures as authorities continue efforts to reduce the growing number of crashes on Kenyan roads.
