Shimo la Tewa Boss Trashes Pastor Mackenzie’s Alleged Prison Poison Plot

Shimo la Tewa Maximum Prison boss Abdi Willy Adan has dismissed claims by controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie that his life is in danger inside the facility.

Appearing before Tononoka Children’s Court Principal Magistrate Nelly Chepchirchir, Adan said security at the prison is tight and the alleged poisoning attempt is just speculation.

Mackenzie who is facing multiple murder charges linked to the Shakahola massacre had earlier claimed that suspicious items were planted in his cell to kill him. He said broken glass pieces were found near his food and a white substance on the neck of his water bottle after he returned from a court session in Mombasa.

His lawyer Lawrence Obonyo told the court that Mackenzie believed the alleged tampering was an attempt to poison him, an assassination plot inside the prison walls.

But Adan denied the claims saying all inmates are thoroughly searched whenever they leave or return to their cells. He even questioned how Mackenzie got a bottled drink, the prison does not supply bottled water.

Adan also rubbished Mackenzie’s claim of a hunger strike saying official records show the last one was in February. He confirmed that Mackenzie along with fellow suspects Mzee Smart Deri and Steve wa Mtwapa are taking regular meals.

Adan further said during his routine patrols including one on August 30 he met Mackenzie who personally requested to be transferred to Manyani Prison. Mackenzie said he needed a change of environment but Adan declined the request saying the gravity of the charges requires Mackenzie to be in maximum security custody. He also cited the high cost of transporting him between Manyani and Mombasa for frequent court appearances.
