Tambach TTC Set to Be Upgraded to University Pending CUE Assessment, Says Ogamba.
The Ministry of Education has signaled the possible elevation of Tambach Teachers Training College (TTC) to a university, pending an official assessment by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba announced that the government is awaiting the outcome of the evaluation by CUE before taking further action. He emphasized that it is the government’s intention to establish a specialized university in the region, which would cater to emerging educational and professional demands.
The announcement was made during the graduation ceremony of 353 teacher trainees at Tambach TTC, a function attended by key education and government officials including Principal Secretary for Finance Dr. Chris Kiptoo, PS for Forest Gitonga Mugambi, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, and area MP Adams Kipsanai.
CS Ogamba highlighted the significance of the day, noting that the graduates represented the first cohort trained under the new Competency-Based Teacher Education (CBTE) framework. He praised the program for preparing teachers who are not only knowledgeable but also skilled, adaptable, and responsive to the evolving needs of 21st-century learners.

“The National Education Sector Strategic Plan (NESSP) 2023–2027 requires that all teacher educators be retooled to effectively implement the CBTE curriculum,” he stated. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening teacher training institutions to ensure they can deliver high-quality, modern instruction.
Ogamba also praised Tambach TTC’s efforts in promoting co-curricular activities, which he described as essential to the holistic development of teacher trainees. He said the CBTE model integrates academic, practical, and co-curricular components to produce well-rounded educators.
As part of the government’s support, the Ministry has disbursed a cumulative total of KSh 31.4 million in recurrent grants to the institution across three financial years (2022/23 to 2024/25). The CS emphasized the importance of transparency and financial accountability, urging the college’s board to uphold strong internal controls and timely reporting using the approved International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) framework.
Additionally, he called on the college’s leadership to supplement government funding by pursuing partnerships with stakeholders such as the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), county governments, and other development partners. He encouraged the board to explore income-generating ventures that can support key institutional priorities, particularly infrastructure.
The potential upgrade of Tambach TTC to university status represents a major milestone in expanding access to specialized higher education, particularly in underserved regions. The Ministry’s final decision will depend on the outcome of the CUE’s review, which will assess the institution’s readiness to meet university-level academic and infrastructural requirements.
