Teargas as University of Nairobi Medical Students Protest Over Missing Marks

Tension in Nairobi on Wednesday September 3 after police fired tear gas at University of Nairobi (UoN) medical students protesting over delayed exam results.

What started as a peaceful march outside the main campus quickly turned chaotic when protesters blocked University Way with burning debris and stones causing massive traffic jams in the city centre.

According to online footage, the students were chanting defiantly accusing the university of withholding their grades. The situation turned ugly when riot police intervened and protesters hurled stones in retaliation.

The disgruntled students mainly from the Faculty of Health Sciences say their missing marks have disrupted their academic progress and threatened their graduation.

“We sat our exams in April, September has come and there are still no results. Graduation is only two weeks away and without marks we cannot proceed with our studies or even apply,” said Emmanuel Keboi Oribo, Chairperson UoN Students Association for Health Sciences.

Keboi said the demonstrations will continue until all results are released and normal university activities have already been paralysed.

This is just weeks after UNSA suspended an earlier planned strike over accommodation fees. At the time an internal memo had assured students the issue would be reviewed. But frustrations over exam results have reignited the anger and hundreds are now on the streets.

The university administration and relevant authorities have not issued a statement on the matter.
