TikTok Star Dylan Page Exposes Kenya’s Police Brutality — Then Flees the Country

Globally known TikTok influencer Dylan Page, who boasts more than 15 million followers, is out of Kenya following his documentation and upload of videos showcasing purported police brutality during the recent Nairobi protests. His expose has awakened widespread debate locally and abroad.

During a trip to Kenya this month, Page photographed and reported on police brutality, such as the on-the-spot killing of hawker Boniface Kariuki.

The police shot Kariuki at point-blank range along Moi Avenue during protests after blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody, was killed.

Protests have created calls for Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat’s prosecution.

Page’s video, recorded at the shooting scene, chronicled what transpired in the incident. “I am in Nairobi, Kenya, and everyone must know precisely what happened here on Tuesday,” Page explained in his video.

He recounted the series of events that occurred, giving his international viewers a firsthand report from the site.

Other than this incident, Page’s content also addressed what he described as a broader pattern of reported extrajudicial executions and forced disappearances in Kenya.

These situations, he said, have worsened since the 2024 anti-government demonstrations and anti-finance bill protests.

Page explained that he did not want to post his videos until he had safely left the country. “I did not want to post this until I got home because not only is discussing a topic like this dangerous, but bringing attention to a situation like this on a global scale like this is something I do not think is going to be well received by some people,” he stated.

Page’s reporting has served to resuscitate global focus on the law enforcement strategies of Kenya.

Human rights organizations have again complained of alleged abuses, while the Kenyan government maintains silence regarding the specific charges in his videos.

The expansion has generated concerns of accountability for police action within Kenya and security for individuals collecting and distributing such information.

Further investigations and legal recourse may follow as public and global pressure mounts.
