Tourism CS Rebecca Miano Roasted After ‘Peru’ Blunder in Elgeyo Marakwet Landslide
Tourism CS Rebecca Miano has been roasted by lawyer and political commentator Willis Otieno for being out of touch with Kenya’s realities after a landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Speaking on Sunday, October 2, 2025, Otieno questioned Miano’s knowledge of the country’s geography, saying it was embarrassing for a government official in charge of tourism to be unfamiliar with parts of the country she represents.

“A whole Cabinet Secretary for Tourism can’t tell the difference between Peru and Elgeyo Marakwet, even when the latter is literally in mourning after a landslide. How do you represent a country you can’t even recognise on the map?” Otieno asked.

His criticism came after the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that several people had been injured after a landslide hit Moror Village and Chesongoch Centre. The incident, triggered by heavy overnight rains, displaced dozens of families and caused destruction.
Otieno was frustrated, saying the episode showed the growing gap between Kenya’s leadership and the suffering of citizens.
“When Kenyans were counting bodies and consoling survivors, she was probably checking if Machu Picchu was in Keiyo South. If tourism depended on her geography, we’d be marketing Kericho as the Bahamas,” he added.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organisations, led by the Kenya Red Cross, were on the ground in the affected areas. In a statement on its official X account, the Red Cross said, “A landslide following heavy overnight rains has hit Moror Village and Chesongoch Centre, Elgeyo Marakwet County, many people injured.”
The agency said emergency response teams were on the ground helping survivors and assessing the damage. The Elgeyo Marakwet disaster is the latest in a series of weather-related incidents as heavy rains continue to hit parts of the country, leaving many families homeless and in need of help.
