Tragic Case in Makueni as Man Cuts Off Own Private Parts

A 29-year-old man from Chyandulu Village in Makueni County is fighting for his life at Makindu Sub-County Hospital after he allegedly cut off his private parts with a sharp object.

The incident occurred on October 1, 2025 and was reported by the man’s 70-year-old father and 34-year-old brother who rushed him to hospital for treatment. Police have classified the case as self-inflicted serious bodily harm but the reason behind the act is not clear. Investigations are ongoing.

While such cases are rare in Kenya, medical experts say genital amputations whether accidental or intentional are challenging to treat. In some cases reconstructive or replantation surgeries can restore urinary and sexual functions if done under specific conditions.

A notable case was in January 2019 at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) when doctors reattached the penis of a secondary school student whose organ had been severed near the scrotum by an unknown attacker. The complex procedure took seven hours and involved 15 specialists and restored the boy’s ability to urinate and partially regain erectile function.

Experts say several factors determine the success of such surgeries. The amputated organ must be preserved in a sterile and cool environment and surgery should be done within six hours to prevent irreversible tissue damage. Microsurgical expertise is also key requiring collaboration between urology, plastic and reconstructive surgery teams.

According to medical research on ScienceDirect, microsurgical penile replantation is the gold standard for treating such injuries. This involves reconnecting arteries, veins and nerves under magnification to restore circulation, sensitivity and function. Compared to traditional methods, microsurgery reduces the risk of tissue necrosis, strictures and long term dysfunction.

Kenya has had successful outcomes including the 2019 KNH case but not all hospitals have the advanced technology or specialized teams to do such procedures. However medical literature says timely intervention and proper handling of severed tissue can improve patient’s recovery prospects.

For the Makueni man in hospital, doctors will determine if reconstructive options are possible depending on the extent of damage and preservation of tissue. Meanwhile authorities are still probing the circumstances surrounding the shocking incident.
