Tragic Turn: Bride-to-Be Collapses and Dies During Church Service Days Before Wedding
What should have been a season of celebration and love has turned into heartbreak for a young couple in Kericho County, Kenya. Brian Rotich, 24, was preparing for his long-awaited wedding when he received devastating news: his fiancée, 20-year-old Dorcas Cherono, had died suddenly during a church service.
Cherono, a church youth leader at Kipsege Church of God, collapsed while leading praise and worship on November 15, an activity she had been passionate about since her teenage years. She was rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead on arrival.
Speaking to reporters from his Nakuru home, a grief-stricken Rotich recalled the shock of learning about her death. “I thought they had come to inquire about the wedding preparations, but their faces told a different story. After gathering courage, they broke the news that Cherono was no more,” he said.
Rotich initially struggled to believe the news, spending nearly an hour in stunned silence before attempting to call Cherono. Her phone was off, and repeated calls to her church elders and friends confirmed the tragedy. “I could not accept it at first. I only began to process it after seeing her body at the hospital mortuary,” he added.
According to witnesses, Cherono’s last day was marked by the same energy and commitment she had always shown in her church work. She woke early, cheerful and full of life, and left for the service ahead of schedule. On her way, she stopped briefly at her brother’s home before heading to church alone.
At the service, Cherono encouraged youth congregants to remain strong in faith and reminded them of the upcoming pre-wedding event set for December 7. She then took the microphone to lead a lively praise session. It was during this session that she suddenly clutched her chest and collapsed. “Panic gripped the congregation. They rushed her outside and administered first aid. She complained of chest pain and asked for water. She even told her mother she was dying,” Rotich recounted. A motorbike was arranged to take her to hospital, but she did not survive.
Rotich and Cherono had been planning their wedding for months, set for December 18 at Sayunist Church of God in Rongai. Their romance began a year ago during a church service in Kericho, blossoming into love with the support of both families. Despite financial constraints, Rotich, a casual labourer, had been saving diligently to ensure a memorable celebration, with most arrangements—including church bookings, committees, and family meetings—already completed.
Their last encounter was on October 31, when they visited their deputy overseer’s office in Kericho to apply for their marriage certificate. Rotich described Cherono as vibrant, prayerful, and full of promise, noting she was preparing for her KCSE exams with plans for college sponsored by her grandfather. “Just days ago, we were discussing wedding flowers, music, and food. Now I am choosing a coffin. I still find myself reaching for my phone to call her—and then it hits me that she’s gone,” he said.
On Tuesday, Rotich joined Cherono’s family at their home, where burial preparations, including the erection of tents, were underway. Friends, church members, and the wider community continue to mourn the loss of a young woman whose life ended far too soon.
