Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya Recovering After Christmas Day Accident, CECM Confirms

Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is recovering after sustaining a broken leg in an accident on Christmas Day, the county government has confirmed.

The update was provided by Pius Gumo, the county’s Chief Executive Member (CECM) for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning, and Urban Development, during the memorial service of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo in Bungoma on Monday, December 29.

Mr Gumo, who delivered Governor Natembeya’s condolences to the family of the late politician, did not disclose the specific circumstances of the accident but explained it was the reason for the Governor’s absence from the service.

“I have brought the condolence message of Governor George Natembeya. He got involved in an accident during Christmas and broke his leg; that is why he could not be here. He would have loved to be here to console the family,” Gumo said.

He added: “On his behalf, I would like to console you and remind you of his message to the family, and recognise Jirongo as a leader who championed the interests of the lowly citizens. We as leaders should do the same.”

Governor Natembeya’s last public engagement before the accident was on December 24, when he visited Wamalwa Kijana Hospital in Trans-Nzoia. During the visit, he reportedly settled bills exceeding Ksh6 million for patients, predominantly mothers, and interacted with them to understand the challenges they faced prior to their admission.

Regarding the late Cyrus Jirongo’s burial, Natembeya was among the key advocates for invoking traditional rites, including the placement of a torch inside the casket—a custom often observed when a prominent figure dies under controversial or unresolved circumstances.

During the memorial, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa criticized the government for its lack of representation at the service and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death.

“There was no government representative at the mass. Not even the person who pioneered the YK92 with Jirongo,” Wamalwa lamented, stressing the need for a comprehensive report to shed light on the events leading up to the former Cabinet Minister’s death.

Governor Natembeya is expected to continue his recovery in Trans-Nzoia, with county officials assuring the public of his improving condition.
