Universities Fund Issues Last-Minute Directive to Students Who Missed Out on Scholarships

The Universities Fund has issued a new warning to students who risk missing out on scholarships due to mistakes in the application process.

In a public notice released on Saturday September 6, the agency is urging first years to review and correct their details before the deadline. This comes after some students provided wrong information, applied under the wrong category or changed institutions after applying.

According to the notice, affected students should log into the Higher Education Funding portal at www.hef.co.ke and update their records to match their current universities. The agency says only those who do so before September 14, 2025 will be considered for funding in the current academic year.

The directive targets three groups: students who initially applied as self sponsored, those who have since transferred institutions and those whose school details were recorded incorrectly. The Universities Fund has also confirmed that students who missed the initial scholarship window can still apply.

This comes after the government last week extended application deadlines for both the Universities Fund and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) giving first years more time to complete their applications.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogweng said no eligible student will be locked out of financial assistance. He said the government has set aside Ksh23 billion which has so far supported over 802,000 students across the country.

The CS also advised students to regularly check their Higher Education Funding accounts to confirm if their applications are being processed and funds are being disbursed correctly.

Earlier this month the Universities Fund issued a similar advisory signaling an ongoing effort to clear the application system and ensure technical issues don’t block deserving students from accessing higher education support.
