🇺🇸 Visa warning for FIFA World Cup 2026 fans as Kenyans urged to apply early despite new ‘fast-track’ system
Kenyans hoping to attend the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been issued a stark warning by the United States Embassy, cautioning that holding a match ticket does not guarantee entry into any of the three host nations.

During a joint briefing held in Nairobi on April 23, representatives from the US, Canada, and Mexico outlined strict visa requirements and urged fans to begin their applications as early as possible to avoid last-minute disappointments.
Officials emphasised that, despite the excitement surrounding the tournament, immigration rules remain firmly in place.
“A FIFA World Cup 2026 ticket does not guarantee a visa or admission to Canada, Mexico, or the United States,” the embassy warned.
New FIFA PASS system offers limited relief
In a move aimed at easing travel logistics, FIFA, alongside the three host nations, has introduced a voluntary system known as the FIFA PASS.
According to FIFA, the tool allows eligible ticket holders to receive priority when scheduling visa interview appointments at US embassies worldwide. However, it is not a shortcut to approval.
The system is only available to fans who purchase tickets directly through FIFA’s official platform or via its hospitality partner, On Location.
“Scheduling an interview appointment via FIFA PASS does not guarantee the visa will be issued,” the US Embassy reiterated.
“Like all visa applicants, ticket holders undergo thorough security screening and vetting.”
Who doesn’t need FIFA PASS?
The embassy clarified that travellers who already hold valid US visas—or those from countries under the US Visa Waiver Program (ESTA)—do not need to apply for FIFA PASS and should proceed with standard travel preparations.
Step-by-step: How to apply for FIFA PASS
Fans seeking to use the system must:
- Log into their FIFA.com account and opt into the FIFA PASS programme
- Complete the DS-160 visa application form
- Upload a passport photo and pay the visa processing fee
- Schedule a visa interview and confirm ticket-holder status
If the details provided match across both the FIFA PASS and visa application, applicants may receive priority appointment slots.
Canada offers no fast-track option
Unlike the United States, Canada has not introduced any equivalent fast-track system. Kenyan travellers must follow the standard visa process, with no prioritisation linked to World Cup ticket ownership.
Warning over cross-border travel during tournament
One of the strongest cautions issued during the Nairobi briefing concerns fans planning to travel between host countries mid-tournament.
Officials warned that attempting to apply for a US visa from outside one’s home country—such as while in Canada or Mexico—could prove extremely difficult.

“If you are already in Mexico or Canada and decide to attend a match in the US, securing a visa at that point will be very hard,” an official noted.
This is due to long-standing US policy requiring visa applications to be processed in an applicant’s country of residence—a rule that will not be relaxed for the tournament.
Passport validity rule highlighted
FIFA also urged fans to check their passport validity well in advance, recommending that travel documents remain valid for at least one year beyond the intended return date.
The advisory comes as demand for World Cup tickets continues to surge globally, raising concerns that unprepared travellers could miss out despite securing match access.
