Zaheer Jhanda Blasts ODM for Lecturing Ruto over Police Shooting Orders

Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda has hit out at Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for attacking President William Ruto’s recent orders to the National Police Service. ODM, led by Raila Odinga, has condemned Ruto’s directive to police to shoot violent protesters.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna termed the president’s remarks as reckless, saying they are a dangerous path for the country.

Speaking in the Senate, Sifuna cited the case of Rex Masai, a protester who was shot in the leg, and asked why police target limbs during demos. “A state officer standing and saying you can shoot people as if people don’t die from gunshot wounds… We’ve totally lost our way,” Sifuna said.

Raila Odinga also issued a strongly-worded statement condemning Ruto’s instructions, saying any orders to kill, injure or traumatize citizens violate human rights and escalate violence.

Via a post on X, Jhanda accused Raila and ODM of overstepping their boundaries by trying to tell the president how to govern. The UDA MP said ODM has no legitimacy to lecture the government, saying the party has never won a national election. “ODM Should not Threaten or Lecture us on how to Run Government or Human Rights Issues. They have Never won any Elections,” Jhanda posted on Saturday, July 12.

Jhanda also challenged ODM’s credibility, asking its members to resign from Cabinet positions if they don’t agree with the government’s direction. “If they’re Uncomfortable in the Broad Based Government, Then MUHAME Mbio… Ask Your Ministers to Resign, and then we shall take you Serious. Otherwise, fungeni mdomo,” he said.
