70 MCAs Back Motion to Impeach Sakaja
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is in trouble as many county legislators have now thrown their weight behind an impeachment motion to have him removed from office.
The push by the Nairobi County Assembly (MCAs) members is due to allegations of incompetence, negligence and failure to deliver on key promises.
During a Kamukunji convened by Speaker Ken Ng’ondi, MCAs expressed frustration over stalled ward level projects which they say have crippled service delivery in the city. It was during this meeting that the lawmakers resolved to go for an impeachment motion.
By Sunday, August 31, the process had gained momentum. Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai revealed that nearly 70 MCAs had signed the motion, a clear sign of the momentum building against Sakaja.
Nairobi has 123 MCAs after the death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve. To impeach Sakaja, at least 93 MCAs must support the motion.
“Today, almost 70 signatures have been collected in a members’-initiated process to impeach Nairobi Governor Johnson Arthur Sakaja. The county assembly has 123 members after the death of Hon. Joel Munuve, MCA Kariobangi North Ward,” Alai announced.
This comes just days after reports indicated that Azimio leader Raila Odinga had held a closed-door meeting with Sakaja and other top county leaders. The meeting focused on governance issues and leadership wrangles in Nairobi.
Those present were Governor Sakaja, his deputy Njoroge Muchiri, Speaker Ken Ng’ondi, Majority Whip Moses Ogeto, Budget Committee Chair Wilfred Odalo, former Cabinet Minister Fred Gumo and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed. Majority Leader Peter Imwatok was not present as he was in Busia.
With signatures piling up and political pressure mounting, the stage is set for what could be one of the biggest political battles in Nairobi’s recent history.
