Anthony Joshua: Cause of Fatal Crash That Killed Two of His Associates Revealed by Nigerian Authorities
New details have emerged surrounding the serious road traffic accident involving former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua, which claimed the lives of two people in Nigeria earlier this week.
The British-Nigerian boxer was among the occupants of a Lexus SUV that was involved in a fatal collision on Monday afternoon while travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of the busiest highways in the country.
Joshua, 34, escaped with minor injuries and was taken to hospital for checks, while two of his close associates were tragically killed in the crash.
Where did the accident happen?
The incident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major transport route linking Ogun State to Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos. According to local authorities, the vehicle was travelling near the Danco Petrol Station area when the collision took place.
Nigerian officials later confirmed the identities of the victims as Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, both of whom were travelling with Joshua at the time. Their deaths have since been confirmed by Joshua’s team.
What caused the crash?
Preliminary findings from Nigerian authorities indicate that excessive speed played a significant role in the accident.
Investigators revealed that the Lexus SUV was being driven at high speed when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle along the expressway. During the manoeuvre, the car reportedly lost control and veered off course before crashing into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.
Joshua, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, was immediately evacuated from the scene and rushed to hospital for medical attention.
Joshua’s condition confirmed
Joshua’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, issued a statement confirming that the boxer was in a stable condition following the incident.
“Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG can confirm that Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment,” the statement read.
“He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected, and we ask that their privacy be respected at this incredibly difficult time.”
Nigerian president speaks out
Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also released a public statement after speaking directly with Joshua, offering his condolences following the loss of his friends.
“I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, in the recent accident,” Tinubu wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“I wished him a full and speedy recovery and prayed with him. AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care.”
The president added that the tragedy had cast a sombre mood over the country, praising Joshua’s character and contribution to Nigeria’s global sporting reputation.
“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season. I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” Tinubu continued.
“As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.”
Joshua remains under medical observation as investigations into the fatal crash continue.
