Nyandarua Senator John Methu has questioned the commitment of some United Opposition leaders to the coalition’s plan to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, raising concerns over possible divisions within the camp.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Sunday, October 11, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Secretary-General singled out Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as politicians whose next moves could affect opposition unity.
Methu alleged that President William Ruto was attempting to divide the opposition by encouraging Nyoro to pursue a separate political path. He claimed he had received a similar offer from the President.
“When I heard him say he has a party, I couldn’t believe my ears because it is he who told me that another party is a creation of William Ruto. This same offer of forming a party others were given. If I was to name moles, then I think the name Ndindi Nyoro will feature prominently,” Methu stated.
The senator’s remarks were allegations made during the interview and did not establish that Nyoro was working with the government against the opposition.
Methu Also Raises Questions About Matiang’i
Methu extended his concerns to former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee leader Fred Matiang’i, pointing to his close relationship with Nyoro and their appearances together at political rallies.
He suggested that questions surrounding Nyoro’s political position had also left him uncertain about Matiang’i’s intentions.
“I cannot speak about Matiang’i because I thought I knew him very well. These days, I don’t think I know him. If I say Ndindi Nyoro is a mole, what can I say about Matiang’i, and they are friends?” he added.

Matiang’i and Nyoro have maintained that they are part of the wider opposition and would support whoever is selected as its single presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027.
Gachagua Had Earlier Warned of Opposition Divisions
Methu’s comments came days after DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua raised concerns that some opposition principals could pursue separate political paths if they failed to secure the coalition’s presidential ticket.
Gachagua’s remarks triggered speculation among sections of the public about which opposition leaders might break ranks, with Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka among those mentioned.
Kalonzo, however, has denied claims that he intends to abandon the opposition, with his party maintaining that the coalition remains focused on challenging Ruto in the next election.
During the Citizen TV interview, Methu expressed confidence in Kalonzo, citing the Wiper leader’s support for Gachagua during the 2024 impeachment process despite their political differences.
“I can trust Kalonzo any minute. Gachagua’s own people did not stand with Gachagua. It was very unfashionable to stand with us, but Kalonzo did. He was gaining nothing then, but he just chose to stand with us because he thought we were being treated unfairly. I trust him today, tomorrow and every day,” Methu said.
Jubilee’s Position in Opposition Alliance Also Under Scrutiny
The debate over opposition unity comes amid questions about Jubilee’s place in the United Alternative Alliance (TUA), which is led by Kalonzo.

Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni recently urged the party to reconsider its position in the alliance, arguing that it was not receiving the respect it deserved.
Kioni called on Jubilee to review its political options and consider other formations as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
With several opposition leaders seeking to maintain a common front, disagreements over party strategy, leadership and the presidential nomination could become increasingly important as the election approaches.
