Babu Owino unveils bold political roadmap: One-term Nairobi governor bid before 2032 presidential run
NAIROBI, Kenya — Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has publicly declared an ambitious political roadmap, revealing plans to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, serve for a single term, and subsequently mount a presidential bid in 2032.
Speaking on April 26, 2026, in Kisumu during mobilisation activities associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, Owino set out his long-term strategy in remarks that could reshape opposition politics in the coming years.

“Mimi kama Babu naenda Nairobi governorship term moja kisha 2032, ntaenda presidency,” he told supporters, signalling both confidence in his political trajectory and intent to transition swiftly from county to national leadership.
The outspoken legislator’s comments came amid a broader opposition push to consolidate grassroots support ahead of future electoral contests. The mobilisation events drew several prominent leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo, highlighting growing coordination within opposition ranks.
Earlier in the day, the leaders attended a church service at Triumphant Christian Church in Nyalenda, where they engaged with congregants before proceeding to planned political rallies linked to the movement.
Owino, a vocal and often controversial figure in Kenyan politics, has steadily built a national profile beyond his Embakasi East constituency. His latest declaration positions him among a new generation of leaders seeking to transition from parliamentary roles to executive office, first at the county level and ultimately at State House.
Political analysts suggest that his proposed one-term governorship strategy could be aimed at leveraging Nairobi’s political and economic significance as a springboard for national leadership, though questions remain over how such an accelerated path would resonate with voters.
The announcement is likely to intensify early manoeuvring within both county and national politics, as aspirants begin positioning themselves well ahead of the next electoral cycle.
