CCTV ‘Shows Two People in Jirongo’s Vehicle’ as Family Questions Death Account
Fresh controversy has emerged surrounding the death of former Lugari MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo, after private investigators hired by his family claimed he may not have been alone in his vehicle at the time of the fatal road crash.
The new claims, which contradict earlier police reports, were revealed during a memorial service held in Trans Nzoia County, where several political leaders and family associates called for a comprehensive forensic investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death.
According to the investigators, a review of CCTV footage from multiple locations allegedly shows that two unidentified individuals were seated in the front of Jirongo’s vehicle earlier in the journey. This finding challenges the initial official account, which stated that the former MP was driving alone when the accident occurred.
Speaking at the memorial service, former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri said the findings had raised serious questions that could not be ignored.
“The initial report shows that when Jirongo left the Karen Oasis area in Nairobi, his vehicle was later spotted at Park Place. More significantly, CCTV footage from Naivasha indicates that there were two people seated in the front of Jirongo’s vehicle,” Khaniri said.
He added that investigators have so far been unable to identify the individuals seen in the footage.
“Unfortunately, the investigators have not been able to establish who they were,” he noted.
Khaniri further claimed that the same individuals were allegedly not present in the vehicle at the time of the crash, a detail he said deepened suspicions about what transpired in the final moments before Jirongo’s death.
“These are not minor details. They are serious questions that must be answered, and I will continue to ask them until the truth is known,” Khaniri said, calling for a full forensic examination.
He stressed that the family was seeking clarity based on evidence rather than speculation.
“The family wants to understand, through science and facts, exactly what happened to CJ,” he added.
Khaniri also suggested that some of the injuries observed on Jirongo’s body did not appear consistent with the reported accident, though he did not provide further details.
Other leaders echoed similar concerns. Former Webuye MP Joash Wafula Mang’oli described Jirongo as an influential national figure whose death deserved thorough scrutiny, while former MP Fred Gumo questioned the effectiveness of the initial investigations.
“People are asking whether a simple torchlight can reveal what police investigations have failed to uncover,” Gumo said.
Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau paid tribute to Jirongo’s political legacy, describing him as a unifying figure.
“He championed unity, especially among the Mulembe community. We have lost a great leader,” Bisau said.
In response to the growing public concern, Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli assured Kenyans that the government remains committed to uncovering the truth.
“A forensic investigation is already underway. No stone will be left unturned,” Masengeli said, speaking during a second funeral service at Jirongo’s home in Maili Saba, Kitale.
He added that investigators would continue with in-depth inquiries until all facts are established and urged the public to refrain from speculation as the probe continues.
“We ask Kenyans to remain patient and allow investigators to do their work,” Masengeli said.
