Climax Bus Driver Re-summoned as DCI Releases CCTV Findings in Cyrus Jirongo Fatal Crash

Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a detailed update on the ongoing probe into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Cabinet minister and ex-Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, confirming that the driver of the bus involved has been re-summoned for further police action.

In a statement issued on December 16, 2025, detectives dismissed speculation circulating on social media suggesting that the accident scene may have been interfered with, insisting that preliminary findings firmly establish that the crash occurred on the night of December 13 at the Karai area along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

According to the DCI, the driver of the Climax Company Ltd bus involved in the collision, identified as Tyrus Githinji Kamau, has already been questioned by investigators and released on cash bail. However, he has now been ordered to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, just days before Christmas, as investigations continue.

“Tyrus is out on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving,” the DCI said in its statement. “He is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on 22nd December 2025 for further police action.”

The driver is facing charges of dangerous driving contrary to the law, as detectives work to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.

As part of the inquiry, investigators have also recorded statements from key witnesses, including a night guard and a fuel attendant at Eagol Petrol Station, both of whom were on duty at the time of the incident and provided their personal accounts of the events that unfolded.

CCTV and forensic findings

Following the crash, a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed to the scene to conduct preliminary examinations and secure crucial exhibits.

Detectives recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, which has since undergone initial review and analysis. According to the footage, Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction at 2:18:40am, although he did not stop to refuel.

At 2:19:10am, he halted at the station’s exit before making a right turn at 2:19:19am to head back towards Nairobi. Just seconds later, at 2:19:25am, a public service vehicle bus was captured ramming into his car.

The crash involved Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 350C, and a bus, registration number KCU 576A, owned by Climax Company Ltd. The head-on impact pushed Jirongo’s vehicle approximately 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to rest about 50 metres away.

Detectives are also examining Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including recording statements from individuals he interacted with earlier that night, particularly those present at a meeting held at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

The DCI added that further analysis of the CCTV footage is ongoing, with additional statements expected from passengers who were aboard the bus and other potential witnesses.

Once investigations are concluded, detectives confirmed that a comprehensive case file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and further legal direction.
