Cyrus Jirongo: Last Footage Emerges of Former MP Enjoying Night Out Before Fatal Crash
Former minister and Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo, has tragically passed away following a devastating road accident in Naivasha.
The 64-year-old politician died instantly when his vehicle collided head-on with a passenger bus at approximately 3am on Saturday, December 13, in the Karai area of Naivasha Sub-county. Jirongo was driving a Mercedes-Benz saloon car from Nakuru to Nairobi at the time of the crash.
Officers from Naivasha Police Station were quick to respond, transferring Jirongo’s body to the Naivasha Sub-county Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. Both vehicles involved in the incident were impounded as part of ongoing investigations.
Jirongo, who previously represented Lugari Constituency in Parliament, also served as Minister for Rural Development during the latter years of the KANU administration. Known for his political acumen, he earned a reputation over decades as a formidable organiser and mobiliser, with influence that extended beyond elective office.
The late politician’s body was later moved to Lee Funeral Home, where family members were seen visibly sombre as they prepared to view him.
In the hours preceding the tragic incident, a video surfaced showing Jirongo enjoying a night out with friends, in what many are describing as a farewell gathering. In the footage, he is seen pouring drinks for his companions and sharing stories about his life and roots.
“I live in Lugari, Kakamega, but I come from the Tiriki tribe in Vihiga County. I left my people there, and now I live with the Bukusu. I saw you seated together, and I thought I should say hi so that you don’t say the person from home (Jirongo) passed by and ignored you. My home is near Lirende Primary School,” Jirongo told friends, his voice full of warmth and happiness.
The footage captures Jirongo in high spirits, a stark contrast to the tragic events that followed. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
