DCI Anti-Narcotics Officer Held Over Alleged Ksh60 Million Heist as Court Grants Detectives More Time
A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer attached to the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) has been detained after investigators linked him to an alleged Ksh60 million robbery, in a case that has raised fresh concerns over alleged criminal involvement by law enforcement officers.
The officer was presented before the Limuru Law Courts, where the prosecution sought orders to detain him for 14 days to allow detectives to complete investigations into the high-value robbery.
However, the court ordered that he remain in custody at Lari Police Station in Kiambu County until July 27, 2026, when it will determine whether to extend the detention period.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Brenda Ofisi said investigators should continue with their inquiries while the suspect remains in custody.
“The respondent is to be remanded in custody at Lari Police Station until July 27, 2026, when the court will issue further directions on the detention orders. The applicant is at liberty to proceed with investigations,” Justice Ofisi ruled.
The officer was arrested on July 22 after detectives alleged that he was part of a group comprising fellow police officers and civilians accused of orchestrating the robbery of Ksh60 million belonging to a private company.
According to court documents, the robbery occurred on June 29, when two company employees were transporting the cash from Nairobi to Migori.
Investigators told the court that the workers left Nairobi at around 9:00 p.m. in a private vehicle before they were allegedly ambushed by armed men travelling in three vehicles fitted with concealed registration plates.
The attackers, who are said to have been armed with AK-47 rifles, allegedly overpowered the two employees, robbed them of the Ksh60 million and confiscated their mobile phones valued at approximately Ksh65,000.
After the robbery, the victims were reportedly abandoned along Mai Mahiu Road, where they later sought assistance.
Detectives revealed that preliminary forensic investigations linked one of the stolen mobile phones to the DCI officer on the same day the robbery was committed, a development that investigators say formed a key basis for his arrest.
The investigating team further told the court that they suspect the operation involved additional police officers, with some of the alleged perpetrators reportedly wearing official police uniforms during the incident.
To strengthen the case, detectives have sought permission to conduct searches at properties linked to the suspects in Nyeri and Bungoma counties.
Investigators believe the searches could lead to the recovery of the stolen cash, firearms allegedly used during the robbery, mobile phones and other exhibits considered crucial to the investigation.
The court also heard that two other suspects previously arrested over the same case are expected to appear before the Limuru Law Courts on July 27 for further directions.
The investigation comes amid intensified efforts by authorities to tackle corruption, organised crime and alleged criminal conduct involving public officials, particularly within security agencies.
