DCI Summons Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda Over Keumbu Violence as Probe Into Attack on Edwin Sifuna Convoy Intensifies

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Zaheer Jhanda as investigations gather pace into the violent attack on a political convoy travelling through Kisii County on Friday, July 3.

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 5, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that the legislator had been directed to appear before detectives at the Kisii County DCI offices to record a statement in connection with the incident.

According to police, the summons forms part of an ongoing investigation aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the violence that erupted during the political tour.

“The Hon. Zaheer Jhanda, MP for Nyaribari Chache, has this morning been summoned to appear before the Kisii County DCI office in connection with the ongoing investigations,” the National Police Service said in a statement.

Investigators are seeking to determine the events that led to the attack after several vehicles travelling in the convoy were allegedly pelted with stones and damaged by a group of youths along the Kisii–Keroka highway.

The convoy was part of the Linda Mwananchi political tour led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, which was heading to Keroka for a public rally after earlier engagements in Kisii.

Videos widely shared on social media appeared to show dozens of youths throwing stones at the convoy, while some individuals were allegedly seen carrying crude weapons as the vehicles attempted to proceed through the area. The footage has since attracted widespread public attention and prompted calls for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted.

Police have not announced any arrests directly linked to the incident, but detectives say investigations remain active and that all individuals believed to possess information relevant to the case may be required to record statements.

The latest development marks a significant escalation in the probe as authorities seek to establish whether the violence was spontaneous or organised, and whether any political actors played a role in planning or facilitating the attack.

Neither MP Zaheer Jhanda nor his office had publicly responded to the summons by the time of publication.
