Driver of Bus Involved in Fatal Crash Speaks After Cyrus Jirongo Death
Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has died following a tragic road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police have confirmed that the incident occurred at around 3:00am in the Karai area of Naivasha, involving Jirongo’s vehicle and a passenger bus belonging to Climax Company.
Speaking to reporters, Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama said the former legislator was driving himself from Nakuru towards Nairobi when the crash happened. According to preliminary police findings, Jirongo was behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz, registration number KCZ 305C.
“It has been established that the deceased attempted to overtake several vehicles before colliding head-on with an oncoming bus,” Kiama stated.
The impact of the collision was fatal, with Jirongo sustaining severe head injuries and being pronounced dead at the scene. His body was initially taken to the Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary before later being transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
The driver of the Climax bus, Tiras Kamau Githinji, has since spoken publicly about the moments leading up to the accident. In an interview with TV47 reporter Willy Dennis Njiru, Githinji said the crash could have been avoided.
“I saw the car overtaking a line of vehicles on my lane,” the 52-year-old driver said. “There was nowhere for me to swerve or escape. The bus was full, and everything happened very fast.”
Githinji added that the bus was carrying 65 passengers at the time of the collision, all of whom survived the incident.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash, as police continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, particularly during night travel and overtaking on busy highways.
Jirongo, a prominent businessman and former legislator, served as the Member of Parliament for Lugari and remained an influential figure in Kenyan politics and public life.
