Motorists travelling between Muhoroni and Kisumu have been urged to avoid the busy highway after a bridge along the route reportedly collapsed, leaving the road completely impassable and disrupting transport along one of western Kenya’s most critical road corridors.

The alert was issued on Saturday, June 27, by the Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA), which warned motorists to seek alternative routes as authorities assess the extent of the damage.
According to the association, the bridge collapsed on Saturday evening, effectively cutting off traffic between Muhoroni and Kisumu. However, by the time of publication, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had not released an official statement confirming the incident, identifying the affected bridge, or outlining plans for emergency repairs.
“One of the bridges between Muhoroni and Kisumu road has collapsed. The road is impassable,” LoDDCA said in a statement.
The affected stretch forms part of the approximately 60-kilometre Muhoroni–Kisumu highway, a vital transport artery linking Kisumu City with neighbouring counties including Kericho and Nandi. The road also serves as a key economic corridor for western Kenya, transporting agricultural produce, particularly sugarcane, to major factories in Muhoroni, Chemelil and Miwani.
The disruption is expected to have a significant impact on commercial transport, public service vehicles and long-distance freight operators who rely on the highway daily.
LoDDCA advised motorists travelling between Kisumu and Muhoroni to use alternative routes through Kericho or Chemelil until engineers determine the safety of the damaged section.
“Please plan your journey accordingly and follow directions from traffic officers,” the association added.
Authorities have yet to reveal what caused the bridge to collapse or provide a timeline for reopening the road.

The Muhoroni–Kisumu highway features three major river crossings over the Nyando, Kibos and Mbogo rivers. As of Saturday night, it remained unclear which of the three bridges had failed.
The latest incident comes just hours after another tragedy struck along the nearby Londiani–Muhoroni Highway, where a serious road accident on Saturday reportedly left several passengers feared dead, raising fresh concerns over transport safety in the region.
Motorists are advised to monitor official updates from KeNHA and traffic authorities before travelling through the affected area, as diversions and traffic disruptions are expected to continue until the damaged bridge is inspected and repaired.
